I understand my old Village Green is now threatened with destruction by my old employer South Tyneside Council. Well I always knew it was a typical urban common – there for 7-12 years between developments, and earmarked for housing, but it is still a sad time. It had so much value: a place for people to walk their dogs, the daily route to school for hundreds of children, a place where young people could play and construct things out of trolleys and wood, and have fires too. A place where you could hear birds singing in the alder trees, pick free apples and pears in the autumn, and enjoy a constantly changing art exhibition on the gypsy protection concrete installations. As well as so many lovely wild flowers – and wonderful views of the cranes of the shipbuilding yard on the tyne. Lets celebrate the Village Green.
